It’s all about that bait, ’bout that bait… (sung to the tune of “It’s All About That Bass”)!
As winter settles in and water temperatures drop, finding bait is the key to finding fish in Baffin Bay. This time of year, fish stack up where bait is most concentrated—and while that bait can sometimes be harder to locate, once you find it, you’ve answered the age-old question: “Where are the fish?”
During colder conditions, it’s especially important to focus your efforts near deeper water and slow your retrieve down just a bit. Fish move slower in cold water and conserve energy even more when barometric pressure is high, making patience and presentation critical.
This is when larger-profile baits really start to shine. Lures like the Texas Customs Corky Fat Boy and Texas Customs Softdine XL have been producing consistent results. Color selection matters:
- Darker colors on darker days or in off-colored water
- Lighter colors on bright days or in clearer water
Work these baits low in the water column, keeping them near the bottom to trigger reaction strikes from colder, less aggressive fish.
Good luck, and I’ll see you on the water!
